Mrs Ponds,

It came to my attention some time ago, right around the time of your daughter's birth, that Hydra has an interest in becoming better acquainted with you. She asked for permission to write to you, and after assurances from my sister and my husband, I reluctantly agreed to the exchange.

Since then, Hydra has expressed further interest in meeting your infant and your husband, and seeing the cafe and shop where you make your living. Naturally, such a visit not be possible until she is on holiday from school - Christmas, perhaps.

Still, I have some concerns about such a visit. I do not know what kind of household you and your husband keep, and I shouldn't want my daughter to be exposed to any paraphernalia or practices which may cause her to become upset or confused. Before I can agree to such a visit, I think it necessary that I assess for myself whether this is an acceptable environment for Hydra.

As such, you may expect me for tea tomorrow afternoon. I shall bring Rigel along, as I don't believe you've seen him since he was an infant. He's well past two years old now, and walking and climbing into everything. I am quite amenable to become acquainted with your own little growing family, while at the same time determining whether or not it is in Hydra's best interests to become acquainted with it, too.

Expect me at 4 o'clock.

Sincerely,
Mrs Lestrange
I gave word that you both be notified: the body has been positively identified by a trusted source. Presumably you know as much by now. Cause of death has been verified as Killing Curse.

Now we must think carefully of how to make the unhappy announcement to Raz and Narcissa - before other tongues get there first.
A note intended to bring you both up to speed -

Hydra, despite your lack of response, I know that you must have received my owl regarding your journal entry. I shall succinctly repeat what I said yet again: such short, childish missives are nothing more than an attempt to clamour for attention. If you feel you have done something truly worthy of boasting, then by all means tell the world in less pitifully obscure language; otherwise, save your triumphant outbursts for your Father, as such a success is more down to his skill at playing the Knight than it is to your own efforts. (Though I should credit your ravenous sweet tooth as well, I suppose.)

Information not in the owl: Hydra, you are to report to Buckingham after breakfast tomorrow. I have petitioned our Lord and He has graciously allowed you the honour of spending the next week with Harry, seeing as Draco is busy with his parents and Harry's mudblood is in disgrace. Feel I have reasonably presented the case to Him that if Harry is to be in female company, better it not be the unclean sort. My hope is that you will take in the business and bustle of Buckingham and find yourself inspired into servitude for our Protectorate, so that you will at last find your calling and rise to fulfill it. If it happens that you remain uninspired, then at least this can be considered good practice for seeing to Harry's needs.

Rodolphus: Have managed to secure a delivery of three male camp prisoners for the re-creation exercise. None are as pure of blood as one would hope, but all match up quite well in height, weight and age. Exercise will commence on Tuesday, once they've been delivered. I don't need to emphasise how important this re-creation is; as such, please keep all interruptions to zero.
No doubt you've been waiting for this, so I'll just get on with it:

How long has it been going on?

Rodolphus, Cissy, Lucius...

Do any of you have an inkling as to what's happening at the school today? From what I can piece together it's something to do with a dangerous incident, as all students have been recalled to their Houses. And since the incident must surely be more than a flooded loo, it would be helpful if those in charge at the school could say more instead of leaving journal-reading parents in the dark.

Also, the Bulstrode girl said that Hydra was initially missing. Surely someone at the school will at least have the courtesy to let her parents know that she was found.

February has been a month to burn the midnight floo powder. Fortunately, it looks as if I will be able to return home to my husband and child at a reasonable hour tonight. Not so fortunately, the MLE's business today was not wrapped up entirely as planned. All I will say on the matter is that when bodies show up at all-too convenient moments, I can't help but become immensely suspicious.

The net tightens, however, and it shall tighten further still.

Negligence, Negligence. My own, naturally. Though some might rush to my defence, given that I've an infant, a career, an extended family, and other various and sundry Protectorate business to attend to, there is never good excuse for negligence. And so I write.

On that subject, Hydra Elladora Lestrange, do not think that I've been so busy as to miss that you have decided to Owl your Father this week and not me. I believe I made it plain that I expect at least one Owl a week from you, describing the details of your lessons, your marks thus far, and a transcription of any comments (be it praise or criticism) verbalised to you by a Professor or Prefect. I hoped you had conveyed this information in the Owl to your Father, but when I read it I was greeted with some prattling nonsense about your robe rabbit and an ever-growing collection of sweets and chocolates.

So with your best interests in mind, I have Owled your cousin Draco and instructed him to no longer allow his mudblood to fetch you sweets. Bad enough you borrowed money from him for a trifling toy, but now you abuse the services of his slave, as well.

And Narcissa, please do not send Hydra chocolates out of pity. Or pocket money, for that matter. You may recall that Father rarely gifted me with such luxuries, and I am only better for it. As the eldest, Hydra will learn responsibility and self-sufficiency for her own good, even if you and my husband try to spoil her in secret.

Hydra, if you want pocket money, sell some of those sweets you've collected. Or perhaps the robe pet - they seem to be in demand enough.

I am pleased, however, that you have expressed an interest in becoming an Auror. In fact, it seems that Wright and Gupta made quite an impression on much of the Hogwarts' student body. I myself cannot recommend the career of an Auror enough - nothing compares. Such is why I have continued my field work instead of taking over for old Mafalda, or stepping into Rufus' shoes, for that matter.

Of course, not everyone is cut out for the life of an Auror. See your groundskeeper if you want an example of why.

Mother, Cissy and I just finished tea, having settled on the details for Sunday's festivities. It looks as if the weather should be fair enough to hold the naming ceremony outside in the gardens, while the ritual of ancestral trees will be carried out in the grand hall. After all, we wouldn't want any of those tapestries to be sullied by a rouge rain shower.

Walburga has already brought up the Black tapestry from Grimmauld Place, and Rodolphus convinced Rabastan to bring round the Lestrange tapestry when he was up from Hampshire on Monday. And, after much Owling back and forth, Rodolphus' cousin Cornelius has promised to bring the Jugson's early on Sunday morn. He had best keep his word, especially as I am not entirely convinced that the Jugson side of Rodolphus' ancestry has proper respect for tradition. When they brought the tapestry over for Hydra's ritual of trees, the thing looked like it had been stashed up in the attic, for I am certain I spied bits of cobweb and such on it. I made my disapproval on the matter entirely clear, so perhaps Cornelius delays now only because he is wisely making sure that the tapestry is in immaculate condition before presenting it to me.

Stephen, I hope that you will consider bringing your young charge along with you on Sunday. It would do the small one good to see the Rosier tapestry, I think, so that he knows how fortunate he is to have been taken in by such a significant and established pureblood family.

As much as I am looking forward to Sunday's events, I will admit that I am just as eager to get back to work. Early reports indicate that the new Auror training programme will pay off very well, but I do feel that my presence is a necessary component of the MLE's eminence, and thus a benefit to the fruition of our Lord's vision for Britain.

Fortunately, we've had a nanny lined up for Rigel for some time now - Mrs Baylock, who also looked after dear Harry when he was an infant, and as such was unavailable for Hydra. How funny that we should acquire the perfect Nanny now, with a child as peaceful and easy as Rigel, when we couldn't do so with Hydra, who wailed so much that I often considered sealing her gob off with spellotape. 'Twas like living with a howler.

Rodolphus has been trying to convince me that Hydra feels neglected with a new baby in the house, but since I haven't been able to find her all day, I will conclude that he's likely projecting.

Last evening, during celebration of of Freedom from Tyranny and dear Harry's birthday, Rodolphus and I welcomed our son, Rigel Phineas Lestrange.

His birth date is a very auspicious one. Unlike Hydra, his hair and eyes are very dark like mine, and he cries very little, and feeds heartily, without fuss. I'm sure I couldn't be more pleased.

The naming ceremony will take place in two weeks, at ten in the morning at Blackmoor Park, followed by the ritual of ancestral trees, and then mother will provide all with a light lunch.

Otherwise, please forward all Owls bearing gifts to St. James Palace.

Now comes that tedious time wherein the nipper's debut is expected any day now (Sunday, to be more precise) and I've got nothing to do but wait around for it to grace us.

Not true. Plenty to do, including a meeting with Professor Sinistra about the upcoming Youth Protectors League excursion, a face-off (so she thinks) with old Hopkirk, a date with Barty to curse Dawlish's new desk chair, for his desk job, and lastly, supper with Mother to finish arrangements for the naming ceremony.

On that last bit, wonderful news: He has told me that He will likely be able to break His busy schedule and attend the naming ceremony. Praise. The name itself is still undecided. I'm still fond of Ophiuchus, but Rodolphus feels that it will fate him to the nickname of "Opie." The Razzer thinks he ought to be named Rabastan (not likely!), Cissy likes Cygnus, Rodolphus is fond of anything beginning with "R" (perhaps), and Hydra suggested Daniel, which is just plain silly.

I feel very hot and uncomfortable and, worst of all, slow. I think I shall have the mediwitch go fetch me another tonic. Sunday cannot come soon enough.

I wonder what it is about the West Country that keeps its inhabitants here for so many generations. I cannot say that I see the appeal, unless one enjoys exploring abandoned seaside resorts, or climbing up Little Hangman. But it is business I'm in for, not pleasure, so the lack of recreational activity is neither here nor there.

Meanwhile, I shall sit on this hill with my book and eat a mango - got from Rodolphus for New Years. Who knows where he gets such things, but I appreciate that he does so. Livre des figures hiéroglypiques is such an interesting read. The wind keeps flicking the pages, which is helpful since they are difficult to turn while wearing gloves. For the moment, it is easier to write.

It is unimaginably empty. And cold. Yet if I kept wandering, I think it shouldn't be too difficult to find some elderly, hospitable home that is willing to take me in for tea and sympathy.

I am very good at waiting.

At last, Thicknesse and Scrimgeour have seen the light. What use is being a Legilimens, after all, if one cannot employ their skills in the pursuit of justice and righteousness? Praise our Lord, for I know that He agrees.

Malfalda is quite put out, naturally, as the approved use of Legilimency is something she has fought against for some time. I dare say she might feel differently if she had any Legilimency skills of her own. I also have it on good authority that she is completely unskilled at Occlumency. One wonders how she ascended to her position in the first place.

Thanks to Legilimency, I have discovered that Hydra's tutor, Miss Forney, was not following the cirriculum that I and my husband developed for her. We spent much time on these lessons, formulating just the right balance of dark arts immersion with practice wand-waving and spell incantation. Miss Forney, bless her beating heart, saw fit to slacken the lessons, fearing that their difficulty would send Hydra crying to us for a reprieve.

This itself is proof that she has not learned one damned thing about my daughter in all these months, and for that, Miss Forney was sacked.

That makes nine tutors in the last four years. Until I can find someone suitably skilled and trustworthy, Rodolphus will be in charge of Hydra's education.

I confess I am not entirely pleased with this compromise. Though my husband will stand by the lessons we have developed, he does have a tendency to allow Hydra her own way. Unfortunately, he is not someone I can sack.

Hydra asked to see my journal the other day, as she knows that dear Harry has one, as well as cousin Draco. I wouldn't allow her to handle it, of course. I've glimpsed things upon these pages that I wouldn't dare subject her eyes or mind to. No, not at such a tender age.
